THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE WILD WECRASHED ON APPLE TV+

You don’t necessarily need star power for a show to work. However, it certainly never hurts.

We’re seeing an increasing amount of A-listers and popular actors navigating the realm of prestige TV and this year will see plenty more exciting shows reach screens.

Indeed, one of the latest is WeCrashed starring Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto.

Created by Lee Eisenberg and Drew Crevello, the American drama series is based on the podcast WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork by Wondery. In turn, on the other hand, that was based on real events.

Now that it’s streaming, let’s dive into the true story behind WeCrashed.

THE TRUE STORY BEHIND WECRASHED

This series tells the tale of WeWork, an American commercial real estate company providing shared workspaces for tech startups.

It was founded by Adam Neumann (played by Jared Leto). His and Miguel McKelvey’s shared office space Green Desk – founded in 2008 – would essentially become WeWork in New York in 2010; this is when they launched the first office.

Real estate developer Joel Schreiber invested $15 million and the increasing growth of the company was evident. In fact, it was eventually valued at $47 billion.

However, some began to claim that Adam’s behaviour took a turn, with unconventional office parties reportedly being held and Vanity Fair claiming meetings were being skipped.

Adam then went on to establish the communal living space WeLive and the private school WeGrow, further encouraging others to make claims of the brand essentially exhibiting cult-like behaviour.

THE STORY OF ADAM AND REBEKAH

The school was Adam’s wife’s – Rebekah, played by Anne Hathaway – passion project. She had also been a part of WeWork in an advisory capacity from its origins.

As for her role aboard WeGrow she was its chief brand and impact officer.

Cracks began to form in the public eye when the company made efforts to go public in 2019, as it was revealed that it was valued at $10 billion and not $47 billion.

With the lens of the media firmly magnifying other activity at WeWork, Adam stepped down before resigning.

WeCrashed aims to dramatise these events and explore what happened behind the scenes. Episodes 1-3 premiered on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 18th 2022, with episodes scheduled to follow weekly.
